C. multiflorus Bunge in Ledeb., Fl. Alt. 2:220 (1830). Ic: Ledeb., Ic. Fl. Ross. 3:21, t. (1831). Upright shrub, up to 2(-3)m. Leaves broadly ovate, elliptic or broadly obovate,up to 5 x 4 cm, obtuse, broadly cuneate at base, bilaterally glabrous or slightly hairy beneath, especially when young; petioles up to 10 mm. Inflorescence branched, loose, erect, (3-)5-20-flowered. Flowers with an unpleasant smell; petals white, spreading; pedicels, peduncles and receptacle, glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Fruit red, subglobose or obovoid, c. 10 mm long; pyrenes 2, often fused. Fl. 6-7. Open forest, moist N. slopes above river, 1250-2300 m. Type: [Transcaspia] Mnt. Czingiz-tau, Kazakhstania, C.A.Meyer (LE!). Extreme E. Anatolia, rare. A9 Kars: nr. Sarikamiş, (Grossheim 5: map 6). B10 Kars: Küçük Ağri Da., nr. Serdar Bulak, 2300 m, D. 46906! C9 Hakkari: Cilo Da., Diz De., 1250-3000 m, Watson et al. 2853! C10 Hakkari: Nehil Çayi 25 km from Yüksekova to Hakkari, 1790 m, D. 45842! Caucasia, C. Asia, E. to C. China. A very variable species. A specimen from CIO Hakkari: Sat Daği, between Yüksekova and Varegöz, 1750-1850 m, D. 45315, with ± distinct and persistent pubescence on the lower side of the leaf blade and more compact, tomentulose corymbs, is apparently a hybrid between this species and C. nummularia. |
