Shrub or small tree up to 10 m; axillary spines 0.7-2 cm; leafy spines longer, scanty. Leaves ovate or obovate in outline, up to 5 x 4 cm, base cuneate or sub-truncate, dark green above, glaucous beneath, glabrous to pubescent; lobes (on most leaves) 3-5(-7), deeply divided, acute or obtuse, entire or sparsely dentate near the apices; lower leaves on fruiting shoots sometimes only shallowly lobed or coarsely dentate; petioles up to 3 cm. Inflorescence lax, 10-18-flowered; flowers white or pinkish, 8-15 mm diam.; sepals triangular, reflexed in fruit; style 1. Fruit red or brownish-red, subglobose or ovoid, 6-10 mm diam., glabrous. Fl. 4-6. Hillsides, macchie ,Quercus scrub, mixedforests, roadsides, s.l.-1800(-2000)m.
