Erect perenniai, 50-200 cm. Roots not tuberous. Stem simple or branched, tomentose. Basal leaves with 3-5 pairs of large leaflets, 2-8 cm, toothed and ± lobed, sparsely hairy, green above, tomentose, canescent beneath. Inflorescence 5-25 cm, longer than wide. Sepals hairy, c. 2 mm, reflexed after flowering. Petals 5 or 6, 2-5 mm, clawed. Achenes 2-3 mm, spirally twisted, glabrous. Fl. 5-8. Damp meadows, by streams, 1400-2285 m.

Europe, N. Asia. Euro-Sib. element. Turkish material belongs to subsp. ulmaria. Subsp. denudata (J. & C. Presl) Hayek, recorded from C. & E. Europe and the Caucasus, differs in having green leaflets with sparse, long hairs beneath, and subsp. picbaueri (Podp.) Smejkal, extending from Austria to S.E. Russia, differs in its pubescent achenes (cf. Fl. Europaea 2:6, 1968).
Tribus RUBIEAE. Spiny, often straggling shrubs or unarmed creeping herbs. Leaves 3-5-foliolate or imparipinnate; stipules present. Inflorescence corymbose or paniculate. Epicalyx absent. Ovary superior. Fruit of many (rarely few) drupelets arranged on a conical receptacle.
