Shrub 1-2 m, ± erect. Cortex of young stems often purplish-brown. Prickles rather thin, up to 9 mm, straight, somewhat compressed with a dilated base, uniform, sparse, sometimes lacking. Leaves pure to dull green, sometimes tinged with purple, often greyish-green beneath; leaflets usually 7, elliptic, 1-3 x 0.8-2.6 cm, usually obtuse, with a rounded base, glabrous or sparsely pubescent at least beneath, uni- or bi-serrate, teeth short, acute; stipules often very broad, glandular-biserrate, with triangular, straight auricles. Flowers occasionally solitary, usually 2-8 together, fragrant, bracts broad. Pedicels 1-2 cm long, smooth or glandular-hispid. Sepals narrowly ovate, up to 3 cm long, with a long narrow dilated apex, outer sepals pinnatifid with long, linear to lanceolate lobes, glandular on the back, patent to deflexed, persistent but deciduous before the fruit matures. Petals c. 3 cm long, white or pale pink. Styles villous to lanate, stigma-head large, compact, semiglobose; disc rather narrow, flat to concave, orifice wide. Hypanthia ovoid, 1-1.5 cm, glandular-hispid or smooth, bright red. Fl. 6-7. Pinus forests, wood margins, scrub on banks and slopes, meadows. 1700-2750 m.

Georgia, Soviet Armenia, Iran. The C. European subsp. montana differs in the form of the inflorescence, in the indumentum and in the posture of the sepals. The following specimen is probably a hybrid: R. montana subsp. woronowii x R. canina-A8 Rize: Ikizdere, Yetimhoca (Cimil), 2100 m, D. 21001!
