?Endemic. E. Medit. element. On Cyprus the species is represented by two small-leaved populations (var. weissii H. Winkler and var. ovalifolia H. Winkler). A. orientalis is very closely related to A. subcordata C.A. Meyer from N. Iran, but differs from it constantly in its stomata being on the upper, not the lower, leaf surface.
