Caucasia, Soviet Armenia. Related to S. variegata and 5. depauperate: from both of which it differs in its much more glandular habit. From S. depauperata it is additionally distinguished by the narrow calyx lobes never broader than long, and by the slightly narrower scarious margin to the calyx lobes. Forms of S. cinerascens from N. Anatolia and Caucasia tend to have the staminode semicircular to transversely oblong (more rarely ovate), and have been called 5. gross-heimii. Southern forms, including the type of S. micradenia. have smaller, broadly obovate-spathulate to narrowly ovate staminodes. Transitional forms occur and the variation in staminode morphology does not seem correlated with other characters.
