Perennial, 60-160 cm, adpressed-pubescent throughout. Stem robust, angular, branched. Basal leaves adpressed- and glandular-pubescent on upper surface, lanceolate-oblong to ovate-elliptic, 10-40 x 5-20 cm, coarsely crenate or bicrenate, more rarely dentate-lobed, with petiole 3-14 cm; cauline smaller, upper sessile, truncate or subcordate at base. Inflorescence rather lax, with numerous arcuate-ascending branches forming a broad pyramidal panicle of racemes. Bracts shorter than fruiting pedicels, ovate to linear-lanceolate. Pedicels 4-8 mm, ebracteolate. Calyx 3-6 mm, lobes oblong, acute or mucronate. Corolla yellow, 15-30 mm diam., with or without pellucid glands, stellate-tomentellous outside. Stamens 4, rarely 5, with reniform medifixed anthers, 2 anterior filaments woolly to anthers or glabrous near apex. Capsule ellipsoid-ovate or subglobose, 4-6 x 3-5.5 mm, stellate-hairy. Fl. 6-8. Steppe, pastures, meadows, scrub, deciduous forest, 900-2700 m.
