Perennial herb with underground stolons bearing terminal tubers. Stem branched, erect, 30-100 cm. Leaves imparipinnate with 3-4 pairs of entire, ovate leaflets, between which are smaller ovate or suborbicluar leaflets. Flowers in terminal cymes, pedicels articulated. Calyx teeth lanceolate-acuminate. Corolla white or purple, 25-35 mm diam. Fl. 6-8. Cultivated.
Described from Peru (Hb. Cliff.).
Native of S. America. Cultivated in Turkey-in-Europe, N., C. & E. Anatolia and the mountainous regions of W. & S. Anatolia, for its edible tubers (potatoes -in Turkish, 'patates'). The Agricultural Research Institute of Sakarya state that the main races cultivated in Turkey are 'Sonnen ragis', 'Cosima' and 'Ari'. Some others, e.g. 'Alpha', 'Fina' 'Frigga' and 'Désiéree', are less often cultivated.
